Avid Media Composer Editing

I have a comprehensive training plan for users of Avid Media Composer; the industry leader in broadcast and film editing software. This training is applicable to users new to Avid who need to learn the basics all the way to those with many years experience that want to learn the more advanced techniques.

Examples of basic topics;

  • Avid media and project structure
  • Capturing/importing/linking to media
  • Customizing keyboard settings and workspaces
  • 3 point editing
  • Refining edits
  • Trimming
  • Working with audio
  • Effects Editing
  • Creating Titles
  • Generating Output

Examples of advanced techniques;

  • Color correction
  • Paint and Spectramatte Effects
  • Custom audio pre-sets
  • Advanced keyframes
  • Advanced trimming
  • Advanced editing (ex. replace and extend edit)
  • Collapsing and Nesting
  • Avid Marquee
  • Relinking
  • Working in a networked environment
  • Consolidating and archiving sequences and projects

Prior to coming in for training I survey the staff to determine their skill level and find out what areas they want to work on. Once training is complete I provide a follow up report to supervisors about areas that were covered and the strengths and weakness of the trainees.

Some of the companies I have provided individual and/or group training on Avid include;

  • City TV
  • APTN
  • Merit Motion Pictures
  • Prime Pro Media
  • Assiniboine Community College
  • Film Training Manitoba
  • Winnipeg Film Group
  • New Media Manitoba
  • St. Boniface Research Centre

I have been editing on the Avid platform since 1998 and have used nearly every Avid product from Media Composer to Symphony on both Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Productions include the 2010 Vancouver Olympics for a host broadcaster and an 18-episode reality network broadcast series. I have edited 1000’s of commercials, corporate videos, short films, documentaries and specialty videos.

My expertise was gained not only through the practical use of editing on Avid nearly every day but also through special training I received at training centers and events like Video Symphony in Burbank, California and the NAB Post Plus conference in New York, New York. I also spent time as a substitute instructor at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, Manitoba, in the Media Production Department.

If you need training for the editors at your company, contact me and we will come up with a plan that will best suit the needs of the trainees and your organization.

“Scott was the my first mentor and introduced me to the world of broadcast post production during my early years in the industry. His ability to articulate complex technical terms in an understandable and fun way, sets him apart from any other mentor I’ve had.
With Scott’s help, In a short time I was able to gain a strong foundation technically as a post production professional. I would recommend Scott as a valuable asset to any training establishment or organization.”
